Admire your work so far, that's quite a mess to sort out. I'm extremely jealous of the deal you got. Those rotaries look like so much fun to work on. The rebuild videos ive watched are fascinating. I'm hoping to buy a roller in a few years, but for a V8 swap..

So now I need to find a new rear plate. All the other plates/housings are usable though, this was the only bad one. Luckily this was the last one I was cleaning, otherwise finding this I would have stopped right there lol.

Been a bit. Just an update. Got a decent condition rear plate and a good condition center plate. Started cleaning the rotors more thoroughly and putting them together. I knew at some point I was going to have to buy more parts because I would mess something up. Luckily it was just the side seals. OEM mazda side seals come a little longer so you can customize the fit, and I ground too much off 2 of them and the clearances are too high.

Got the clearances set on 1 side of each rotor. I can't believe I didn't have any vaseline to hold stuff together.

Besides in a few months it will be A OK.

Sourced a better rear plate than the one I bought earlier. Don't like the staining.

Should be put together in the next month.

Then hopefully I figured out all the hiccups in the ECU....

Got the keg put together today. Man what a pain in the ass. Apex seal springs are tiny and fidgety. Ughh.

Taped and in the process of painting it. Going with metallic black/gold/black.

So. Must. Rust....
Think I did ok cleaning it up, and I think the flywheel/clutch look good to be re-used. There is much meat left on the clutch disc too.

$1500 for that? Since it seems like you know how to work on cars and have access to all the tools this should be a pretty awesome setup. Can't wait to see the final result.

Is it difficult to put together a rotary engine compared to say an i4?

I find it easier. There's a lot less moving parts to a rotary as opposed to and I4, especially if it's na. But of course, you just gotta have patience and be meticulous. It's easy to do something wrong. With all motors.

Yeah once I got 2 of the apex seals/springs in the pressure caused the last one to be a giant pain in the ass to get right. Assembling the front stuffs and checking end play tomorrow, then full on assembly of the front cover and starting to put accessories on it hopefully. I need to change the oil in the turbo turd miata and check some exhaust bolts but hopefully after that I can work on the 7.

Also got the oil pan on (have to re-thread a m6x1.0 hole) and the motor mounts (have to find another mount bolt)

Turned it over by hand with a few squirts of oil in each housing and I have solid compression on each face of the rotor. Pops a little oil spray out with each pass by the exhaust ports. Yay!

So scratched the oil pan gasket in favor of a Banzai Racing oil pan brace. They suggest using black rtv so that's what I did.

Also did some heat wrapping on the lower intake manifold to maybe help improve efficiency.

Good work, but man is it terrifying to see that much work being put into a car that could just be seized. You've got like ~4 years before that beast is legal if it's really a 96. Doesn't matter if it has a state title or not. Years ago my roommate had the feds show up and seize a car he had a state title for. Be careful.

Based on the VIN (Autotrader Japan decoder) it is 10 July 1992, so a little over 2 months and it's legal. Title says it's a '96, but I will have to get that changed soon.

Getting more stuff done. Got about 80% of the vacuum lines ran. Waiting on some carb jets to come in to replace the restrictor pills that weren't there.

So I've been fighting a starting issue for the past 5 days. First it was the ECU wasn't hooked up (duh). Then I had a huge fuel leak (pinched an o-ring). Then I didn't have the coils right. Then it was flooded. I tried for 8 hours Wednesday. Ended with it ALMOST wanting to start.

Come at it Saturday. Did a little more research on deflooding.
-Pulled all plugs
-Removed EGI fuse
-Cranked over at WOT till no fuel mist came out
-Put trailing plugs back in
-Put a few squirts of 80w90 gear oil in the leading plug holes
-Connected everything back up
Literally started in a few seconds. Idle was rough, smoke everywhere. I got excited and turned my camera off, then I let the engine stall. Wouldn't start back up, so had to deflood it again. This time kept my foot on the gas, once it evened out after about 2 minutes, I got out of the car. Revs started climbing, 2500, 3k, so I shut it off. Todays play is to put the TPS on right (whoops), adjust it (I don't have the fast idle cam) and see if it will start without deflooding it again.
