Default Help me RX7 noob thread

Yup. Found me a 96 RX7, right hand drive.

Car wouldn't do anything, so I checked around. Main fuse was blown. Replaced, now car will turn over but won't catch. Needs a little bit of cosmetic work. Door handles, and drivers side headlight lid. Also needs work on the brakes, they are muuuuuuushy.

You will never guess how much I paid for this either....

Being friends with a guy that owns a rotary specialist shop, and seeing how many engines he rebuilds every week.............I am not jealous of this at all. Okay, maybe just slightly jealous.........if you put an LS7 in it.

You should dump the oil to see if there's any coolant in it. If there is then your coolant seals are busted and probably your motor is seized up too. Judging from the fuel pump assembly, the car looks like its been sitting for awhile. Your bank account is in for a good one GL!!!!!!!

Motor spins over, pulleys and all when I try to start it. I will check the oil, that's a good idea.

I paid 1500 for it

Pretty decent deal. I know people paying more than that for half assed interior rolling shells. You could have an engine fully built for big power and still spend less than paying for a good condition stock FD.

So far I have a list of things to check tomorrow.

Crank sensor. Connection, condition, and resistance. Same with the cas.
ECU pin outs if the above is in good working order.
Igniter
Wires

Tomorrow I should have spark unless I have to get new sensors.

rare for the cas to go bad id say.

I've had multiple igniters go bad though. the igniter is also grounded through where its bolted in so sometimes thats corroded too.

CAS and crank sensor checked out OK, 1.14k and 1.15k resistance. Spec is .95 - 1.25k.
All listed wires have continuity at the ECU pins:
NE signal
G signal
Crank/CAS power
MAP sensor
Igniter
Circuit opening relay.

So now I'm on to checking the coils for power, but will have to wait till Sunday. I may have to buy an igniter. Is there an ECU relay?

Yeah so I thought I did in the beginning. Well, thinking about it, I took the one out of the Miata and put in the opening circuit relay, and I don't think I tried the EGI relay.....

Will find out tomorrow if she fires up. Fingers crossed.

No go. I'm lost now.

I've tried everything.

New fuel pump/strainer/filter. Gas been sitting for a long time. Clean tank. Getting fuel coming out the feed line by the dipstick. Good pressure.

Crank sensor resistance measured on 2000 ohm setting
1) @ 1135 ohms (1.135k)
2) @ 1145 ohms (1.145k)
So, those are good. Cleaned off the surfaces with scotch brite pad for good measure

Checked continuity between ECU and:
NE signal - .007 ohm
G signal - .006 ohm
Ground (I'm guessing it's ground, each measure at the same pin on ECU) .007 ohm
Map sensor - .007 ohm
Igniter - .007 ohm
Circuit opening relay - .007 ohm

Coils show good. All within specs.
Wires show good. If I remember right, 3 were close to 2.42 and one was close to 3, setting on 20k. 16.3k per meter rated resistance.
Fuel injectors good. All within spec.

Ignition on, I'm not getting any voltage at the coils. Replaced Igniter, still nothing.
So I checked continuity on each wire coming out/in to igniter to the each coil. .007 ohm except one was at 1.0 ohm on a trailing coil.

From what I'm seeing here, this damn thing should crank up and run. However, there is one BIG thing I'm missing. Even though I could show continuity to the pins on the ECU, the ECU could still be bad. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for any help guys....

Would help to tear apart the ECU and see if any of the caps are blown or anything came loose.

I saw this happen with a 1JZ S13 at final bout. Some of the soldering broke inside the ECU.

Didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, just took it apart.

Someone on the RX7 FB group took the time out to help me for a few hours today.

ECU is getting power. EGI fuse is getting power. EGI relay is getting power. Coils are getting power (checked wrong way first time). ECU is seeing crank sensor voltages while cranking. Igniter has power.

So, ECU replacement time.

Took care of the FPD yesterday. Getting the solenoid I broke, then I have a two day weekend and hopefully enough will power to get the vacuum hoses replaced. Then to just find the coolant leak (center back of engine, comes out like a water hose on low), and hopefully the ECU fires it up! Brap Brap Brap
