Default My Baby ('75 Datsun 280z)

THIS IS A COPY AND PASTE FROM ANOTHER SITE

Whats up everyone my name's Shane and this has been my project for about a year now. First off let me tell you that I am 16 and I have had this car since I was 15. I bought this car for $1800 of my own money. There's no rich mommy and daddy thing going on here. So now for the car, she's a Datsun 280z made in January of '75. (This is my second car. I had a '72 Datsun 240z but that was TOO big of a project).Right now it has a 2.4 straight 6 backed by a 280zxt 5 speed with triple Mikuni's and a blowthru turbo setup. The Mikuni's are 40mm and the turbo is a T04B. Once I get this setup going I'm planning on rocking it like this until I get bored then I am putting a 2jz-gte (Supra Motor) in it. As she sits now she is sitting on 240z suspension with unknown lowering springs. I think the drop is a 2.5" drop because it sits pretty low. Well here are the pics and before you start commenting I know it needs paint LOL.

When I first got her

All the junk in her trunk LOL

After the junk in her trunk was cleaned out and I rustoleum'd the trunk area and put the stock carpet back in

240z seats installed

After the 240z suspension and lowering springs

Now for the motor:

Ok here's the pics. I'm the chunkier one and the one in the yellow shirt is my little bro.

This was right after I was done experimenting to see how it looked.

This was done with Rustoleum gloss black and paint brushes. I only did it this way because I didn't have the cash to get it done professionally and I didn't want my diamond in the rough to turn to swiss cheese so this was my last alternative.

Between the time that I painted the car and the next update I got a free rust-free gas tank for free and installed it. I also got a TURBO emblem from a 280zxt, and a "I <3 MY DATSUN" sticker

Today I went and picked up my new rims for the Z. They are knockoffs but look really nice on the Z. They are 14x7 0 offset. I have to buy some new lug nuts. Also I found out that who ever installed my lowering spring put the backs in the front and the fronts in the rear that's why it looks like it has no motor. Here they are mounted

Today I washed her and cleaned up the exterior and the wheels. I also put in my homemade gauge panel and boost gauge. I have to find 2 more gauges but I don't know what gauges I want. Anyways here's the pics.

Haha I've been around cars a VERY long time.

I sound like I'm 50 or something LOL but yea I did my first motor swap in this a year ago so when I was 15 I did all of this stuff. Anyways I'm planning on having it running and driving before the end of the year, but I also have 4 honors classes so the Z won't be getting worked on as much.

Love the s30's. My first car was a '74 260z.

Nice find on the Cartech turbo system. Do you still have it by chance?

Nice work on the paint job too!

^^Those are the most recent pics. I'm now buying a NA Miata this coming Friday for a VERY low price. I plan on doing coilovers, wheels, a header and exhaust. Then I'll probably drive it and AutoX it, then sell it so that I can finish the Z.

@Sweets: Yes I do still have it and it's for sale. I'm counting on the money from the turbo kit and triple Mikuni's to pay for suspension and wheels for the Miata.

Haha I told my dad that I have a feeling that I gonna get attached to it (I've known about the Miata for 2 weeks and that's all I've been talking about LOL) and he said even if I get attached, he's gonna make me sell it. Thanks for the comments

UPDATE: I got a free 5 speed, and Greddy E-Manage for the 2jz. So the swap is slowly getting pieced together for the Z. It will be running by summer hopefully, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm going to pick up my Miata Sunday I'm so excited. There's a whole new plan for it. Me and 2 other friends are building it for the Grassroots Motorsports $2011 Challenge. It's getting a full cage, racing bucket seats and harnesses, turbo kit, full exhaust, and Megasquirt. Our team is called Team Learner's Permit and we're the youngest team to EVER compete in the Challenge (We're all Juniors in high school). I'm going to start a separate build thread for the Miata once we start getting deep into it.

I didn't end up getting the Miata unfortunately, so I invested some money into the Z. I went and bought paint tor black out the whole turbo kit and core support. I'd rather people not know that I'm turbo'd Anyway, the valve cover, intake plenum, and intercooler are all wrinkle black. Then I painted the compressor housing of the turbo, and intercooler piping satin black. All in all, I think it looks amazing for $40 worth of paint. Tell me what you think.

I also ordered all new brakes, as in rotors, pads, shoes, and all of the hardware for the rear brakes. I have a new water pump, coolant necks, fuel pump, fuel line, and assorted fittings coming. So there will be progress in the next month or so.

Tinted my turn signals and tail lights yesterday. I've decided to go with a NightRider theme so the next thing I'm going to do is paint the stock wheels black and put them on so that the Night Rider theme carries throughout the whole car.

I'm going to be using the Z for the Grassroots Motorsports $2011 challenge and I've come up with a team name. What do you guys think, Team Angry Rooster or Angry Rooster Racing? This weekend I stripped all of the sound deadner out. It took me all day Saturday to strip all of it, but I left the firewall insulation on so that it doesn't get too hot. When I got the car I bought $60 worth of Rustoleum and painted the inside black, I mean EVERYTHING. Now that money went to waste because I painted over the sound deadner. I should have weighed the everything I took out but I was too tired by 12'oclock in the morning to do it. Anyway, here's some pics.

Haven't updated this in a while, since then I've turned 17 (May 12) and changed up the plan a little. Here's the biggest updates:
5/13/11- Well, I've finally decided that I'm tired of seeing the Z sit. So I'm going to do a L28et swap and get it running, because I get my license soo and I need something to drive that will get decent gas mileage. The plan is to swap the motor, swap out the turbo with a Garrett unit I have, put a 300zx turbo ECU in, and put some 440cc injectors and call it a day. If I can get it done for less than $2,000 I'd be happy and can still compete in the GRM $2011 Challenge. So if anyone out there has a L28et, let me know
5/14/11-Sold the carbs, manifold, and linkage. Bought a L28et long block with 96k for $100, picked up an intake, fuel rail, and throttle body for $50 so I have $150 in the motor so far and I'm going to use a turbo manifold that I have and a Garrett turbo that I have that I was going to use for the Miata I was going to build for the challenge, got it and a couple of other things for $25 from a dad's friend that was getting rid of a bunch of car stuff. I have some 440cc injectors that I got in the deal with the turbo. So slowly but surely the motor swap is getting put together.
