This is what I have so far, more to come. Funny enough, its just bondo upon minor dents and some holes, so far thats all Ive seen. Finished primering so rust doesnt come up.

Im not going to do a swap with the 1.7 as I am fine with it and thats what it came with, but original wise, if I found a 6, Id be happy, besides, I like carburetors.
FYI, the 914/6's used a 2.0 liter 6, not a 3.2 liter motor... The 911T's used a 2.2 liter motor. The 3.2 liter motor was 1st used in the 1984 911 Carrera, long after the 914 was history. If a 914/6 has a 2.2, it’s not a real one…. and there are a lot of fakes out there.

I had a 74 914 1.8 back in the 70's that was about as much fun as 4 wheels can be. The 1.8 had a little more torque, which made it a little easier to drive on the road (less shifting). In 1980, I replaced the 1.8 with a 2.2 911S motor which increased the fun factor immensely, but was also the cause of enough tickets to paper a small room. (Hey, I was a kid) With the 2.2 motor my 914 would also give my Dads 74 911 RS (3.0) a run for it money on narrow twisties, but only because it was so much easier to drive with the mid-engine placement. (The 914 doesn’t have the throttle linkage over steer like the 911)

Now if you want to talk about a car that is both fun to drive and will scare the shit out of you at the same time, try driving a 911 RS fast. As my Dad always said, a 911 can take you through a corner faster than almost anything else on the road, but if you don’t know what you are doing, it will spit on your grave….

Yeah, Im still learning up on the history of these, turns out a lot of people stick the 2.2s in the 914s, I suppose easier to find parts? Anyway, no updates yet, havent gotten into it much lately but this next week I should get up with something going. I like my 1.7, not looking for too much performance for it, maybe a little lower, and perhaps a more sporty exhaust. I kind of wish there were more 914 owners around the area like the miatas, Ive learned a lot and quickly about the miatas because of the local clubs, but its been a pain to learn the specs and tricks when all you really have are online resources, which are great, but to be around more experienced people would be nice too.

I take it you visit the Rennlist forums? If not, plenty of resources and plethora of info for anything you might need.

Well I just got my camera working again, just need to get a usb to upload them! So far, the whole side is primered, got an actual sprayer, not the spray can, so I will be painting, interior is completely gutted out and the floors are being rewelded. The car had been hit in the front and it crunched the side a bit, but some rewelding will fix what the previous owners bondo didnt! Once the floors are done, then its new cables for the clutch and gas, and new gas/vacuum lines as well as fuel pump and filter to get this up and going.

So...began cutting and realized the crossmember is rather "severed" from the longs, I took a rubber mallet and hit it a few times, and rust upon rust came out, the channels are completely rotted out..so, I just ordered a new crossmember, firewall insulation, new floor panels, sound deadening paint and floor insulation, seat brackets , plus a reinforcement upgrade including the longs stiffening etc. I had to get the passenger panel since the floor was rotted out, and the previous owner rubber cemented the whole damn thing. So far, spend about $1500 today

Nice! I was looking for a 914 when I found out Emilio was doing Miata's so I went with the latter.
Good luck, will be watching.

Thanks! Well, I sold my miata to fund this, which was my previous project. The flaw with the 914 is that...parts are just a "bit" harder to find and cost a "little" more than miata parts. And everytime the weather changes I have to retune the carb, but I bought this for the joy of tuning, restoring and driving. I have done this with countless Vespas which I still do, so this is much like it, just larger and German. Clutch cables are a regular for me. Ill get pictures once I get my camera working, until then I only have descriptions. I will be cutting the floors out this weekend, but I did already take the frame side panels off, to find the frame rails to be in pristine condition, which was rather unbelievable at first, but its true, the paint is still shiney!

I think it is calling for a sti swap or just a na ej25,

It's not how we fall which defines us but how we rise after falling

Heres the "progress" so far. I had a late start this weekend since I finished some of the home renovations this morning, so far as of this evening, the driver floor board is cut out, it was actually two half floors spot welded together, worst spot welding ever, then they used grout sealer to seal up the holes and cracks, it was a nightmare.

Unfortunately I only got time to cut the rust and the other pan out, but the project is going. I found that the motor mount and the frame holding it is almost gone, the previous owner patched it badly with fiberglass, so all that has to be fixed. More soon!

And this is where the squashed bug sits now, Ive been more busy moving the car then actual work.

My dad freaked when I had the jack stands in the middle of the car and the front moved, but the entire car will sit still perfectly with just two jack stands under the middle as it is pretty much perfectly balanced, I did put ramps and chocks on the wheels however.

Alright, once again, I am back from the abyss. As of now, I have gotten all of the rot, rust, crap (bugs, bug remains etc) from the interior parts of the car. I started metal patching and rust proofing and hope soon to be welding in the new firewall plates, braces and floors in with "ease"! More to come
