Decided to start a build thread for my NB. My goal for this project is 150whp naturally aspirated, keeping the car CSP legal. I want the car to be competitive locally, but do not care about it being nationally competitive as it will be seeing some open track days as well.

Also check out my Turbo NA Build Thread here: http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=12349

I purchased this car bone stock in January 2006. The only mods I did where C-Stock legal. I ran this car in C-Stock the last 3 years and decided to move it to CSP.

Here are some pics of what it looked like when I first bought it:

My first mods to the car were a

-Hard Dog Double Diagonal Bar
-OEM Lip Kit all around
-15x6.5 Black Racing BR-XX Wheels with 205/15/15 Azenis for the street.
-Stock wheels with 205/55/14 Kuhmo V710's for Auto X.

I then swapped the wheels in favor of some 16x7 Advan RG II's and 205/40/16 Azenis.

This is pretty much how the car looked for the last two years, up until about one month ago.

Re: Quinn's NB Build Thread

So I decided to start with the basic bolt-ons and suspension mods. I spoke to DIYAutotune and inquired about a PNP unit for the NB. They said that they have one in the works. As soon as it is released, I am going to buy one with some Fuji Racing IRTB's.

For starters, I wanted to create an intake that was similar to the AutoExe one. Using some parts I had lying around my garage, I made a rough prototype one and cleaned up the engine bay a little.

My Rough prototype:

I then decided to add a header. Seeing that no one makes a decent header except for Racing Beat, I decided to go with a 4-1 OBX header for the 01+ Miata and just swap the egr valve. This header side by side with my friends 4-1 Racingbeat is practically identical. If I find myself having trouble reaching the 150whp mark with ITB's and standalone, I will look into purchasing a more expensive Maxim Works header, until then I would rather not spend 1000.00 on a header.

I was actual surpised with the quality of the OBX. Fitment was also perfect.

I then received my new intake parts and created the final version of my intake. I also did a slight wire tuck of the main harness that runs over the valvecover.

The exhaust is a almost a full 2.5in, aside from the header exit being 2.25.

MSM Rear Lip. I want to thank lpulford for finding this on Miata.net and sending me the link. I jumped on this baby for 250.00 shipped, plus it was already paint matched for my paint code  Thanks again man.

I started doing the suspension, but I had frozen endlinks, so I couldn't finish it. I bought RB endlinks and will have the suspension done tonight. Stay tuned for more pics.

In the meantime, I did a track day a few weeks ago with a local Auto X club. The event was held at Pocono Raceway. They split the Nascar oval into three road courses and did time attacks on two of them (North and East). They scored us by Auto X class, of course because of my bolt ons I was scored in CSP, but I was still running the stock suspension lol. I ended placing 2nd out of 6 people in both of the time attacks.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that I also added a Garage Vary lip.

The results:

My first ever time attack. Was held on the North Course. I ran it with my Azenis 615 and still managed 2nd to a ITS Porsche 924.

Image

The second time attack was held on the East Course. I decided to burn up some 3 season old Kuhmo v710's. Still place 2nd, but look how much the gap tightened. Btw, the Porsche was also running v710's.

Looking good! Looks like you've got a good budget build going on.

Be careful with that breather filter over the header. At high RPMs it might sputter some oil on the header and catch on fire (ask me how I know). :)
Haha thanks man, I will keep that in mind. However, I didnt havent problems at the open track day I did. I even had a couple 30 minute sessions of hot laps with no problems.

looks good quinn .

about how far out is the MSPNP NB?

Thanks Urban. I emailed them about a month ago and this is what they responded with:

"Hi Quinn,

> projects at the moment, but one of our three top priorities on new
> MSPNPs is the '99-'00 Miata. However, we do not have a firm release date

> DIYAutotune.com Technical Support"

Also in Badger's defense, I am the highest ride height NB on CR.net lol. Except that will be changed after this weekend :)

After 3 years of running the car in C-stock, I can honestly say I am really excited to see the car lowered.

lol
yeah you were part of the battle.
good sense of humor though.

how does the Exhaust sound with the straight pipe? (no cat , no resonator)
is that RB?

It can be driven quietly. Surpisingly enough, the muffler does not drone on light acceleration or any deccel at all. At 5k+ rpm it sounds awesome, but when at WOT below there it sounds a little poopy. I am going to weld a straight through resonator into the mid pipe and see what differences that makes.

The midpipe is not a Racing Beat. The Racing beat does not have a bung for the second o2 and I believe has a resonator and is only 2.25in. I bought this piece used from M.net classifieds for like 115.00 shipped. Its also stainless steal.

Anxious to see how much the resonator in the Mid-pipe changes your exhaust tone. My exhaust is a resonated test pipe and non-resonated mid pipe. Its a little much to handle. If you have good things to say about it, I will probably follow suit.

-Anyway we could get a before and after exhaust video? that'd be AWESOME. Thanks Quinn

I could take a video, but it would have to be with my digital camera. I dont have a camcorder.

Re: Quinn's NB Build Thread

How well does the cold side intake work? I've been thinking of doing this myself..
More to the point, what'd you do with the Intake Air Temp sensor? I know 01+ cars have it, but maybe 99-00's don't.

Either way, the car looks great. Good job =D>

One last question...how tall are you? Just trying to gauge how tall the bar is relatively.

Same here. Notice any difference in throttle response Quinn? What's the details on the 90*? Where was it purchased from?

The intake definately made a difference. Aside from slightly better response, the engine revs better to 7000rpm now and does not feel like power is dropping of at 6500rpm like it did with the stock air box.

I haven't dyno'ed the mods, but I have been doing pulls with my friend's 2000 Toyota MR-S after each mod for a frame of reference. Stock vs. Stock he would walk away from me almost immediately. With just the intake, he would still walk away, but not immediately after the hit. With the intake and full exhaust, we are about dead even now. It basically comes down to who wants to beat on their transmission harder. Over the winter I am going to do a 7-9 lb flywheel and a ACT Street Disk clutch. Hopefully the MSPNP will be released soon so I can buy me some ITB's

**edit**

Bryan, I am 5' 10" and have plenty of head room, even with my helmet on.

Andrew, I bought the 90* from www.siliconeintakes.coms

Re: Quinn's NB Build Thread

This thread is looking good...seems that I missed this over the last couple months. the last time i saw you, you were keeping things stock on the NB.

Remind me to check your autocross schedule so I can either go elsewhere or stay home next year..

Quinn..we have to get together sometime soon, preferably when i can get both of my sons in on it. I am sure that they would appreciate a frank discussion on progressive mods and their results, and then determining where to go next. You seem to have a knack for that...

Re: Quinn's NB Build Thread

I had to relocate the wiring for it. I drilled a hole into the bottom of the silicone 90. (You cant really see it in the pictures) I used the rubber grommet/ring from the factory air box in the hole of elbow. It worked like a charm.

Joe,

I would definately love go cruise and grab a coffee or something before the snow comes. The racing season is over for me, other than an indoor karting league on Wednesday nights, so I have more time on my hands now.

Makes sense. Thanks for the update!
